Account Management can mean different responsibilities, depending on the industry you are working. Account management can involve customer accounts, such as follow up calls or letters to past customers, in the case of automotive jobs. In engineering manager jobs, account management may mean following up with suppliers to make sure invoicing and supplies have been received on a construction job. Contract management jobs in account management may mean managing a group of sub-contractors, such as cleaning companies or carpet shampooers in an apartment complex, for example.

As you can see, account management can mean different things, but have a few similarities. They are normally detailed for the fulfillment of a particular work, whether that is for services, completion of jobs, or follow-up on customers. They also involve time management skills and coordination of departments or others to ensure a project is completed.

The account management depends on the size of the company and may involve accounts payable and accounts receivable, which are handled by the accounting department.

In the case of accounts payable, account management may involve negotiating lines of credit with a supplier, or making sure the accounting department has paid bills for supplies in order to get additional parts or supplies. In accounts receivable, it is making sure that money owed by customers is paid, and that credit is analyzed to insure quick payment, to keep the business capitalized.

Account management jobs can also be involved in generating sales or working with the sales department to increase credit lines for credit-worthy customers to facilitate more sales, or to reduce credit lines for questionable customers having difficulty in paying bills. Account management decisions can dictate the expansion of a company, or the protection of capital in hard times.

Contract management jobs usually involve overseeing the fulfillment of a contract by making sure services or product are delivered in the time and for the amount budgeted, whether it be in construction, equipment acquisitions, production facilities or contract labor employees. It involves overseeing the parties involved in the contract to make sure everybody does their part, as outlined in the contract. Attention to detail in contract fulfillment, as well as a general knowledge of legal rights may be needed.

As you can see, account management positions involve constructive work that is designed to increase sales, limit expenses, or protect legal rights, depending on the situation. It involves attention to detail, some accounting ability, and organizational skills.
